Apple Sets April 3 for iPad Debut

March 8th, 2010 by admin

By NICK WINGFIELD And JENNIFER VALENTINO-DEVRIES

Apple Inc. said the iPad will hit stores next month, a few days later than expected but not enough to rattle investors eager to see how consumers respond to the new device.

The Cupertino, Calif., company said it will first begin selling a version of the iPad that uses Wi-Fi to access the Internet on April 3 in the U.S., while a model that also gets online through wireless carriers’ high-speed 3G networks will go on sale later that month.

Apple’s announcement that iPad pre-orders start on March 12th sent the stock up. The Digits panel discusses how Apple’s stock performed, as compared to when the iPhone launched.

Apple will begin taking orders for the iPad from U.S. customers on its Web site March 12.

Apple has said AT&T Inc., its domestic-carrier partner for the iPhone, will supply the 3G wireless service for the iPad in the U.S. But an AT&T spokesman said the iPad won’t be sold in AT&T stores.

Customers in Australia, France, Germany, Japan and other countries will be able to buy the iPad in late April.

When it introduced the iPad in January, Apple said the product would be available in late March. Recently, an analyst report suggested Apple had encountered some production glitches that might delay the release of the iPad and limit quantities of the device that are initially available.

Apple’s announcement that the iPad will come out in early April seemed to reassure investors, sending the company’s shares up $8.24, or 3.9%, to $218.95 on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday.

“Production issues, in my mind, are not days or a week in time,” said Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. “Production issues are when things slip by weeks. So I almost see this date as confirmation that there weren’t production delays, and it doesn’t impact any of our numbers.”

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

It is unclear how many iPad units Apple will have available at launch and whether the introduction will turn into the kind of event that occurred when iPhones first went on sale nearly three years ago, which saw long lines of customers forming in front of stores before it went on sale.

The tablet-shaped iPad, with a large touch-sensing screen for navigating the Internet, watching videos and reading electronic books, is trying to define a new category of technology devices with uncertain market potential, while the iPhone was able to tap into a huge audience of existing cellphone customers.

The iPad, which will come in models priced between $499 and $829, has a 9.7-inch screen, no keyboard and a wireless Internet connection. It is geared for navigating the Web and running software applications that are created by others.

One factor that will affect sales of the iPad is how broadly it will be available in stores.Apple said Friday the iPad will be available for sale through its own retail stores and through Apple retail partners it didn’t name. At an investor conference, Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook recently singled out Best Buy Co. as an example of a retail partner likely to carry the iPad.

Apple’s iPad goes on sale April 3

March 5th, 2010 by admin

ipadIf you’ve been jonesing for an iPad, April 3 is the date you can finally satisfy that craving. Apple said today will start selling its ballyhooed tablet computer on that day. Pre-orders begin next week, on March 12.

April 3 is a Saturday, so expect anxious early adopters to line up overnight Friday. There had been rumors afloat that the iPad would go on sale on March 26, and that those camping out would get a free gift. A freebie was not mentioned in Apple’s news release, which refers to the iPad as "magical and revolutionary".

The models being sold on April 3 will only connect to the Net via Wi-Fi. If you want an iPad that works over AT&T’s 3G network, you’ll have to wait until late April, according to Apple. No firm date was given for 3G model sales, but you will be able to pre-order them on March 12 as well.

Apple unveiled its iPad on Jan. 27, promising the Wi-Fi models would go on sale in 60 days. The April 3 date misses the mark a bit, but not by much.

The April 3 date is only for U.S. sales. Other countries will have to wait until late April.

Now that we know when the iPad will be available, do you want one?

Update: So, it is just a coincidence that Engadget got leaked photos and details of Microsoft’s rumored Courier tablet device today?

I think not.

Tech time travel with Popular Science archives

March 5th, 2010 by admin

While I’m not one of those gray-haired geeks who thinks everything was much peachier in the distant past – I’m far more interested in what the not-so-distant future will bring – I do appreciate an occasional dive into the digital history books. Popular Science, the venerable science and tech magazine, now offers you a really deep dive.

The magazine just posted to its PopSci Web site scanned copies of all its issues dating back – are you ready for this? – 137 years.

Wow. Did they even have science 137 years ago?

Anyway, this is a treasure both for geeks and fans of popular culture. Partnering with Google, Popular Science makes every page from each issue available, including the ads. For example, the June 1949 issue includes a story on the building of the Univac, one of the earliest room-sized computers.

buyabrain

The story says the Univac will be "6,000 times faster than a man with a desk adding machine." And if the cost seems a little steep, consider this:

It will cost $200,000 , somewhat less than Eniac’s $400,000 (PS, April ‘46, p. 83) and Harvard Mark I’s $250,000 (PS, Oct. ‘44, p. 86).

As you can see, prices for computers started dropping from the very beginning!

While you can’t go directly to a specific month’s issue – searching is strictly based on keyword – once you’re in an article, you can scroll the entire magazine. When you do, in the older editions you’ll be treated to some wonderful ads, such as this one for a motorized bicycle.

whizzerbike

Unfortunately, the search feature is very crude. It doesn’t handle multiple-keyword searches well, and there doesn’t appear to be a way to sort searches by date. Popular Science promises improvements are coming, but given that the magazine worked with Google on this, it’s surprising the search isn’t more sophisticated.

Nevertheless, it’s a lot of fun. Plan on exploring the Popular Science archives when you’ve got a lot of time on your hands, because they’re addicting.

March comes in with open comments, Geek Gathering

March 5th, 2010 by admin

It’s a Friday, and that means it’s time for your weekly open-comments here in TechBlog. Leave your thoughts on anything related to personal technology in the comments, and I’ll approve them.

It’s also the first Friday of the month, which means that tonight is the Geek Gathering, the monthly meetup for Technology Bytes, the radio show I co-host on Wednesday nights on KPFT-FM.

SONY DSC

Tonight’s Gathering is special. It’s going to be something of a going-away party. The GG is held at The Coffee Groundz at the corner of Bagby and McGowen, the former haunt of Houston social media icon J.R. Cohen. As my colleague Purva Patel reported earlier this week, Cohen’s left the Coffee Groundz to work for Smart Meals.

Yeah, he’ll still be doing social media marketing and events for the coffeehouse, but it just won’t be the same without him behind the counter. So join Jay Lee, Barrett Canon, Terry "phliKtid" Leifeste, Groovehouse and me as we bid adieu to J.R.

The Gathering kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and goes until the last geek is left standing. Join us, won’t you?
